Home lighting control lets you turn on, dim, and schedule the lights in every room from a keypad, a touch panel, or your phone, and create scenes that adjust several lights at once. At Integración AV we install it in homes in Bogotá and Medellín with Crestron and Lutron.
It’s one of the systems in a smart home and it’s usually the first one automated, because it’s used every day. This guide explains what it includes, how it’s installed, and how it changes your energy consumption.
What Lighting Control Is
A lighting control system replaces standalone switches with programmable keypads and dimmers connected to a processor. With these lighting controls, each button can turn on one circuit, several at once, or a full scene with different intensities.
The lights also respond on their own: they turn on at dusk, turn off when a room is empty, or dim at a set time. That’s what’s meant by automatic lights for the home.

- Scenes
- Buttons like “dinner,” “movie,” or “cleaning” that adjust every light in a room with one touch.
- Dimming
- Adjustable intensity on every circuit, from work light to relaxing light.
- Schedules and sensors
- Turning on by time of day and shutting off when an occupancy sensor detects nobody’s there.
Lighting Scenes by Activity
Light changes how a space is used. Bright, white light works for working or studying; warm, dimmed light works for relaxing or having dinner.
That’s why scenes are programmed by activity, not just by room: “work” in the study, “dinner” in the dining room, “movie” in the living room. When there are large windows, the daytime scene makes use of natural light and leaves the fixtures that aren’t needed turned off.
Wired or Wireless Lighting
In new construction or a full remodel, dimmers and keypads are wired in from the design stage. In a finished home, wireless lines exist, such as Crestron Zūm, that control the light without breaking into walls.
| Aspect | Wired | Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| When it’s the right choice | New construction or a full remodel | Finished home or changes room by room |
| Construction work | Conduit and wiring run to the control panel | Keypads and controllers with no new wiring |
| Scope | The whole house from a central processor | Room by room, with the option to integrate into a central system |
Energy Savings and Outdoor Lighting
Lighting control lowers consumption because it turns off what’s not in use and makes the most of natural light when coordinated with the shades.
Outdoor areas, such as gardens, facades, and pools, are scheduled so they don’t stay lit all night.
Savings
Schedules and occupancy sensors turn off the light in spaces nobody is using.
How We Install Lighting Control
- AssessmentWe review circuits, fixture types, and rooms, and define what gets dimmed and what just switches on and off.
- DesignWe document the system in drawings using AVIXA nomenclature and choose between Crestron and Lutron based on the project.
- ProgrammingWe configure scenes, schedules, and sensors with the homeowners.
- Handover and after-salesWe train the people who use the home and maintain the system with agreed response times.

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Lighting Control
What do I need to control my home’s lights from my phone?
Dimmers or control modules on the circuits, a processor, and the system’s app. In an integrated project, the same app also handles shades, climate, and audio.
Can lighting control be installed without breaking into walls?
Yes, with wireless equipment that replaces switches and communicates with the processor. The technical assessment confirms which circuits support that type of control.
Which lighting control brands do you install?
We work with Crestron and Lutron. We’re Crestron Master Gold and a Crestron Service Provider, and we choose the brand per project and on technical merit.
