A wireless home intercom is a two-way communication system that connects the door to the inside of the home, or one space to another, with no cabling between units. At Integración AV we integrate it into the home automation of houses and apartments in Bogotá and Medellín.
It’s one of the components of our home automation and smart home solution. This guide explains how it works, the types available, and where it’s used in a home.
How a Wireless Intercom Works
Each unit works as a transmitter and receiver on a two-way channel, using radio frequency, Bluetooth, or the home’s network. One is installed at the entrance and the others in the interior spaces.
Radio frequency has more range and works for large homes or ones with a garden; Bluetooth is used in smaller spaces. Network-connected models let you answer the call from your phone.
- Audio only
- A conversation between the entrance and the inside, like a wireless intercom phone.
- Audio and camera
- Besides talking, you see who’s at the door before opening it.
- Room to room
- Communication between floors or rooms, useful in multi-level homes.
Intercom Integrated Into Home Automation
Integrated into the home’s system, the door call reaches the touch panels and the phone. From there you see the camera and talk to the visitor.
If the home has a smart lock, the door opens from the same panel.
Uses in the Home
Entry calls, floor-to-floor calls, and greeting visitors from anywhere in the house.
Where It’s Used in a Home
Home Entry
Know who’s at the door without going to open it.
Multi-Story Homes
Communication between floors without going up or down stairs.
Childcare and Elder Care
Hear what’s happening in another room while doing something else.
Outdoor Areas
Communication with the garden, pool, or service area.
What to Check Before Installing a Wireless Intercom
Actual range depends on the construction: concrete walls, floor slabs, and the distance between the entrance and the interior reduce the signal. That’s why it’s worth testing each unit’s location before mounting it.
- Call points
- How many units are needed and where: main entrance, gate, floors, and service areas.
- Power
- Whether each unit runs on battery or a permanent electrical connection.
- Integration
- Whether the call needs to reach the touch panels, the phone, and the door’s smart lock.
